Public Libraries Need Your Support!
The economic situation in SC is worse than in many other parts of the country. It's clear that the legislature has to make tough choices about funding this year.
Between this year and budget forecasts for next year, SC leads the nation in library budget cuts (30%). At the same time, demand for library services has dramatically increased. Poor economic conditions and unemployment have brought more citizens to their local library. SC Public libraries are providing a critical safety net for families that have been devastated by job or home loss and are trying to make ends meet with reduced income.
-
Libraries are providing crucial internet access to employment resources. SC public libraries that have tracked internet search statistics are reporting that half of the internet searches being conducted are employment related.
-
Libraries are also providing access to online applications for government programs and services (many of these are exclusively available online). Library staff are helping library visitors navigate this system
-
Free library materials and programs are also helping families make ends meet as they have cut household expenses such as paid internet access, buying books, movie theaters and dvd rentals, and other types of family entertainment.
Please join us on February 11th and show your support for public libraries!
